Ji Xiangqi, vice governor of People’s Government of Shandong province, pointed out that Confucianism founded by the great thinker and educator Confucius has made immortal contribution to Chinese civilization, even world civilization, and has continuously provided the valuable source of wisdom for us in different historic periods and in many aspects. The reform that we are experiencing in modern age is much greater than in the past dynasties. In modern world, new things, new circumstances, new problems are appearing constantly, the pace of global economic and cultural integration is accelerating, regional exchanges and cooperation are in the ascendant. Facing this trend of the times, how Confucianism should further explore the innovation path and how to integrate with modern society is an important proposition before the Confucian researchers in new age. The opening of the 6th session of the World Confucian Conference with “Confucianism and Contemporary Social Construction” as the theme to discuss such significant realistic issues as “Confucianism and Ecological Civilization”、“Confucian Ethics and Moral Education” 、“Traditional Rites and Musical and Social Etiquette”、“Confucianism and Cultural Transmission” and so on. By this open international academic platform of this conference, the Confucianism researchers from different subjects, industry and cultural context, “democratically, equally, practically and frankly” carry out multi-level dialogue and communication, promote Confucianism academic innovation together, and promote the harmonious development of human society.
Wang Nengxian, executive vice president of Chinese National Academy of Arts, Confucianism founded by Confucius is the main part of Chinese traditional culture, which reflects the ideal and morality, value and belief of Chinese nation, and constitutes the spiritual motivation that Chinese nation continues and develops. In history, it played an important role in maintaining a unified multi-ethnic nation, and the peace, development and progress of the world. The in-depth discussion and scientific elucidation of Confucianism as the main part of Chinese traditional culture is indispensable for us to inherit and carry forward Chinese fine traditional culture. Our holding the World Confucian Conference that here is setting up a sophiscated and open international Confucianism research and exchange platform and accumulating experience for the inheriting system construction of Chinese fine traditional culture. In this conference we “invites” famous foreign experts to discuss Chinese traditional academic culture together with domestic scholars, innovates the new form of cultural exchange, which plays an important contribution to the mutual understanding and appreciation among world people and the friendly exchanges in the international society not only by becoming the important carrier for Chinese culture to “go out”, but also by promoting the mutual tolerance, reference and harmonious co-existence of diversified civilizations. We hope that the honorable guests and scholars carry on their discussion in the democratic, equal, harmonious and delightful atmosphere, grasp the rich connotation of Confucian humanism, make innovative elucidation and intensive research on Confucianism, explore important thought and culture resources for the realization of “Chinese dream”, and make contribution to the prosperity and civilized progress of human society.
Ma Pingchang, secretary of the CPC Ji’ning Municipal Committee and director of the Municipal People's Congress Standing Committee, pointed out in his speech that Ji’ning has a long history and outstanding people, and is the hometown of such sages as the humanistic sage Huangdi and the 5 saints of Confucius, Mencius, Yanzi, Zengzi, Zisi. “To put what is learned into practice”、“ To make progress with the times” are the basic value pursuit and internal quality of Confucianism. In the past over 2500 years, the reason that Confucianism keeps vitality with the passage of time is that the Confucians in the past dynasties has always been focusing on the reality, paying attention to the social and life questions of their living age and the relationship between human beings and nature, and seeking the solutions ceaselessly. Today, the purpose of our research and inheriting of Confucianism lies in learning wisdom from the ancient sages, discovering the essence of Confucianism, and making Confucianism to play a better role in contemporary society. This session of the conference took “Confucianism and Contemporary Social Construction” as the theme, kept pace with the times, responds to the practical needs, and highlighted the contemporary spirit and time value of Confucianism.
Researcher Yang Chaoming, president of Confucius Research Institute and executive secretary of the World Confucian Conference, gave keynote speech on behalf of the organizers. He pointed out that, in modern age, many people are still perplexed in diversified values. In addition to the promotion by globalization, the reason lies in the loss of “balance” in realistic world and morality. Through serous reflection on reality and history, people become more rational and calm in their understanding of Confucianism. Confucius thinks about human nature and “what makes people human beings”. Confucius requires people to pay attention to “human feeling” and “loyalty among people”, research on “human heart” and “insight about the reality”, think about “human desire” and “the righteousness of the world”. Confucius believes that, the harmony of the society that he aspires to could be achieved as long as people rectify their heart and cultivate their person, apply their family affection to the relationship with others, amplify their “Goodness”, comply with their rationality, and walking in the right way. The approaches put up by Confucius embody more wisdom. As long as people conduct according to the principle of “being loyal to one’s own heart” and “be forgivable to others”, cultivate themselves to bring peace to others, and “don’t do to others what you don’t want be done”, then the shaping the social rite, the construction of moral civilization and the improvement of the environment are all possible. The improvement of human attainment requires a process of “investigating things, extending to the utmost one’ knowledge, rectifying one’s heart and being sincere in one’s thought”. We should approach Confucius and master Confucianism by our heart, and achieve the sublimation of human beings.
